The Component AV Cable connects to your iPod, iPhone, or Universal Dock (newer version only) via the 30-pin dock connector and to your high-def TV, home theater receiver/AMP, or stereo receiver via the component (Y, Pb, and Pr) video and red/white (L+R) analog audio ports.
The use of this cable is the only way to get the best quality video output from the new iPods. Component video output to television is supported by iPod nano (third generation) and iPod classic at 480p or 576p resolution, and by iPod touch and iPhone at 480i or 576i resolution, as opposed to 320p or 320i of the older iPod Video.
The new iPod Classic, Nano with Video, iPod Touch and iPhone will only enable video-output when attached to a cable with a Apple Authentication chip inside. Notably, the new iPods are each capable of a higher maximum 480p resolution of video output than last year’s video-ready model and so investment in this cable or a docking unit is worthwhile to get near-DVD video onto your TV.
